Mid-May Peaches, and Other Thoughts

May 15, 2014

Eeek! It’s already mid-May. I don’t know where the days go. It’s hard, changing careers at this stage of my life–tackling photography, translation, and writing after so many years of teaching. Figuring out how to afford a life in a new country. I’m slooooooooow, everything takes hours–and then more–to seep into my thick head. So with apologies: I have only enough time today to post peaches. (Compliments of my local market.)

Each juicy peach is filled with the perfume of Sicily. And with love, for you. Thank you for visiting my blog.

Have you had the snuffbox peaches? They are white and flat – like a donut shape. They are very juicy and taste almost flower-like. There were a couple of trees near our apartment building and they were free for the picking. Now I have actually seen them in my local Kroger – which is lovely!

    • Jann

The snuffbox peaches are the very very very best, Callie. Kroger?????? Really?? Are they grown in California, do you suppose?

  • Slow is the new Fast……keep moving forward small steps at a time. Ripen like those peaches. xxx
I totally understand about learning new things and creating an income from my passions. B-School is teaching me so much and I know it will all pay off one day soon. xx
PS whats this time of life business….lol I’m fifty this year and yep big changes. You are always inspiring my friend. x

  • I think we are on Facebook together.
Adore those juicy, fabulous peaches. xxxxxxxxxx Love!

  • Cathy

I’d follow you anywhere Jann, as long as all roads lead to Italy 🙂 I do follow you on Facebook as well, couldn’t beleive I didn’t know you were on there for ages!

Love the peaches, it will be a long time before we see them, but I’m thrilled to look out my window and not see snow. Your photography is beautiful, I enjoy going through older posts just to see the pictures. xoxoxo

How yummy! Your peaches look amazing. I bet they smell good, too. Brava, Jann!

    • Jann

They smell great. But fast getting over-ripe. You know how quickly you have to eat stuff in Sicily after you buy it. 🙂

  • The beautiful peaches are an analogy for the way you need all our imaginations with your wonderful images and impressions Jann. I wish you every success with all your endeavours. I hope you have all the support you need. As for going slow, you’re in good company I hope in the land of slow food and the country that still understands that much of life’s joy is in the little delicacies of the everyday. Like a perfectly ripe peach.

    • Jann

You’re so good at these analogies, Janine!! Yes, I guess my personal Slow Work fits right in with Slow Food & Slow Travel. xxxxBACI

  • They’re like gems. Luscious. I hear you Jann about starting afresh. I’m doing it too and it really takes something. xx

    • Jann

Narelle, good luck to you in starting afresh!! It’s fun & frustrating. I was coasting along fine in my old job, but something else was tugging at me… sigh.

  • Gregory

Peaches here have no taste. It’s rare to find a good one; unless you pick one from a tree.

  • Ron

The Sicilians pick their fruit when it is ripe, and ship in small boxes. I can almost smell the fruit.
I always look forward to your stories, and hope to someday see a chance photo of my cousins in Ragusa.
    All the best to you.

    • Jann

Ron, thank you!!! A chance photo of your cousins, eh?? If I keep at this long enough, maybe they’ll pop up!

  • Toni

The fruit was so wonderful in Sicily. I think the fertile volcanic soil has something to do with the intense flavors. Your photos are making me hungry.

  • Nancy

Jann, just checked out your FB page. Love, love, love it

  • Nancy

They look delicious. Love the fruits and vegetables there.

  • I wish I was sinking my teeth into one of those peaches. I don’t do Facebook either.

  • Sam

Wow! In my part of the world, local peaches aren’t going to appear for another 2 months.

  • Ah, I don’t do Facebook. I know, I know. I just don’t. Don’t have time. Don’t have the inclination to learn. But I LOVE your peaches, Jann. And your learning spirit. Don’t give up, my friend. Learning new things builds good connections in our brains and keeps us youthful (so said the person who refuses to learn Facebook, heehee!!)

    • Jann

Ciao Debbie! First of all, I think it’s a smart idea to stay away from FB. And thanks for reminding me about the wiring happening in our brains when we learn new stuff–I just hope mine doesn’t melt or explode or something.
